Hensler Nursery Provides Statehouse Christmas Tree

Featured on WTCA 101.6 FM / 1050 AM

“On Friday, December 9th at 1 p.m. CST Hensler Nursery in Hamlet will be cutting the 25 foot Concolor Fir for the Indiana Statehouse Rotunda. The Rotunda tree will be cut with the assistance of Kankakee Valley REMC crew members from Wanatah.

The Rotunda tree will be loaded and residing at Hensler Nursery over the weekend. Presentation at the Indiana Statehouse will be Monday, December 12th.

Additionally, besides the Rotunda Concolor Fir, Hensler Nursery will be providing the Lt. Governor’s office with an 8 foot Fraser Fir. Both of these Starke County grown trees will grace the Statehouse during December bringing fresh, fragrant Northern Indiana grown Christmas trees to Indiana’s Capitol.”

Midwest Living Reviews Hensler Nursery

Midwest Living ReviewMidwest Living featured a great review of our Christmas tree farm in its Indiana Travel section.

“Nestled in the northern Indiana hamlet of Hamlet is Hensler Nursery, a 300-acre Christmas tree farm that offers so much more than just trees. Its annual Christmas Fest begins with a parade just after Thanksgiving and keeps the holiday spirit going right until Christmas.”
Kim Ranegar, Midwest Living

Hensler Nursery Featured in Midwest LivingMany thanks to Midwest Living for including us in the “8 Christmas Tree Farms We Love” story in the November/December 2011 issue.

“In Hamlet, Indiana (22 miles southeast of Michigan City), Hensler’s has Belgian draft horses pulling wagons out to the ready-to-cut trees on 300 acres. Kids can climb on big toy trains, and a shop sells creches, wreaths, kissing balls and Hensler’s maple syrup. Sing along to Christmas carols while sipping cocoa and sampling snacks.”

Photos from 2011 Classic Car Show

On Sunday, the weather warmed by afternoon and the turnout for the Classic Car Show was about 20 more cars than last year. The cars filled the yard again and it they were all beautiful. Thank you to all the classic car owners who cruised in this year. We admire all the hard work you put into your cars! Congratulations to Bill Wallace, from Knox, IN who won Best of Show for his restored Corvair delivery truck.

And thank you to all who attended Fall Fest this weekend. We have more events scheduled, including the Giant Pumpkin Drop. Check out our events schedule!

2011 Giant Pumpkin Contest and Indiana State Record!

While the weather may not have been perfect, the rain did not dampen our spirits during the opening weekend of Fall Fest.

On September 25th, we hosted the Indiana Pumpkin Growers Association’s annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off. The buzz circulating before the contest predicted that our scales were going to weigh a pumpkin that would beat the state record.

And that’s exactly what happened.

John Barenie of Griffith, IN claimed victory with his 1,308 pound pumpkin. Because this was an official contest, John’s entry goes into the record book as the largest pumpkin ever entered in an Indiana competition. Roger Howard from Grovertown, IN was the previous record holder since 2005 with a 1,273 pound pumpkin. Hard work, skill and good luck are all factors in raising these giant pumpkins, so John has definitely earned his $1,000 cash prize.

While John has rock star status in the pumpkin growers community, we must also mention the strong entries from his competitors:

2nd Place – Don Young, Des Moines, IA: 1,159.5 pound pumpkin
3rd Place – Julie Young, Des Moines, IA: 924.5 pound pumpkin
4th Place – Phyllis Howard, Grovertown, IN: 702.5 pound pumpkin

Yellowstone and Harvest Festival Parades

We’ve had so much fun during this summer’s parade season, and before we roll down the parade route at the Marshall County Blueberry Festival we thought we’d share a few photos from the Yellowstone (Hamlet, IN) and Harvest Festival (Knox, IN) parades. We’re taking our Fall Fest float over the top this year with a train theme, loads of fresh foliage, an animated pup on the front of the antique tractor and the flashing lights from our railroad crossing sign.

The judges must have seen something they liked, because we rolled away with two first place trophies from both parades!
