Earth Day Fun Facts
As Christmas tree growers and foresters, we have a deep appreciation for our connection to the environment and what it takes to keep our planet healthy and green.
Earth Day helps remind us that we need to stay in that green state of mind, and each year on April 22nd 180 countries around the world celebrate this anniversary.
In the spirit of Earth Day, we would like to share a few facts that can motivate us all to consider our impact on the environment and take action.
- Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970.
- 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day.
- More than 100 billion pieces of junk mail are delivered in the United States each year.
- The U.S. buried or burned more than 166 million tons of resources – paper, plastic, metals, glass and organic materials – in landfills and incinerators last year.
- It only takes about 6 weeks total to manufacture, fill, sell, recycle, and then remanufacture an aluminum beverage can.
- Half the world’s tropical and temperate forests are now gone.
- More than 2 million people globally die prematurely every year due to outdoor and indoor air pollution.
- Every year in the U.S. nearly 200 billion beverage containers are sold, two-thirds of which are landfilled, incinerated or littered.
- Recycling, reuse and remanufacturing account for 3.1 million jobs in the U.S.
- Recycling saves 3 to 5 times the energy that waste incinerator power plants generate.
- By reducing our waste 1% per year and recycling and composting 90% of our discards by 2030, we could save 406 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year. This is the equivalent to shutting down 21% of our nation’s coal-fired power plants.
- More than 76% of cardboard boxes and 72% of newspaper were recycled in 2006 but less than 50% of printing and writing paper was recycled.

Hensler’s cuts annual Statehouse tree
The Pilot News
Story by Benjamin Haut
“A Christmastime atmosphere will fill the air at the Statehouse Rotunda as a magnificent Concolor Fir is moved into the building, bringing with it the citrusy aroma of the holidays.
This glorious tree, which stands roughly 25 feet tall, is a testament to the skill and care of the growers at Hensler Nursery, Inc. in Hamlet.
In addition to providing the tree for the Statehouse, they will also be presenting Lt. Governor Becky Skill-man with an 8-foot Fraser Fir.
Hensler Nursery has been providing the Statehouse Rotunda with trees for the holidays for more than 15 years, and they have been presenting the Lt. Governor with trees as well for many years.
“It’s an honor for the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers Association to have access to Statehouse officials, to be able to bring real trees into the Capitol building, and to be able to promote a real locally grown Indiana product. It’s really special that they will allow us to do that, and we enjoy the publicity and the contact we have with Indiana officials,” said Hensler President John Hensler.”

Santa Parade Kicks off the 2010 Christmas Fest
Christmas Fest began this year just the way we like it- with a parade!
Santa cruised into Hensler’s by fire truck and Mrs. Claus was escorted to the festivities by horse-drawn carriage. Thanks to the Knox, Hamlet and Koontz Lake fire departments for their participation.
Adding to the excitement was our favorite radio station, WKVI, who conducted a live broadcast on our tree lot. We’d also like to give a shout out to the Knox High School Tomahawk Jazz Ensemble. Thanks for providing a wonderful musical score to our festivities!

We enjoyed our time in Huron, OH at the National Christmas Tree Association convention! While there last week, we set up a booth and also presented a session on event planning.
