Midwest Living ReviewMidwest Living featured a great review of our Christmas tree farm in its Indiana Travel section.

“Nestled in the northern Indiana hamlet of Hamlet is Hensler Nursery, a 300-acre Christmas tree farm that offers so much more than just trees. Its annual Christmas Fest begins with a parade just after Thanksgiving and keeps the holiday spirit going right until Christmas.”

Hensler Nursery Featured in Midwest LivingMany thanks to Midwest Living for including us in the “8 Christmas Tree Farms We Love” story in the November/December 2011 issue.

“In Hamlet, Indiana (22 miles southeast of Michigan City), Hensler’s has Belgian draft horses pulling wagons out to the ready-to-cut trees on 300 acres. Kids can climb on big toy trains, and a shop sells creches, wreaths, kissing balls and Hensler’s maple syrup. Sing along to Christmas carols while sipping cocoa and sampling snacks.”

Hensler’s cuts annual Statehouse tree

The Pilot News

Hensler's Statehouse Christmas Tree“A Christmastime atmosphere will fill the air at the Statehouse Rotunda as a magnificent Concolor Fir is moved into the building, bringing with it the citrusy aroma of the holidays.

This glorious tree, which stands roughly 25 feet tall, is a testament to the skill and care of the growers at Hensler Nursery, Inc. in Hamlet.

In addition to providing the tree for the Statehouse, they will also be presenting Lt. Governor Becky Skill-man with an 8-foot Fraser Fir.

Hensler Nursery has been providing the Statehouse Rotunda with trees for the holidays for more than 15 years, and they have been presenting the Lt. Governor with trees as well for many years.
“It’s an honor for the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers Association to have access to Statehouse officials, to be able to bring real trees into the Capitol building, and to be able to promote a real locally grown Indiana product. It’s really special that they will allow us to do that, and we enjoy the publicity and the contact we have with Indiana officials,” said Hensler President John Hensler.”

2010 Grand Champs at the Indiana State Fair

Area Christmas tree farm, Hensler Nursery, won Grand Champion at the Indiana State Fair Christmas tree competition on Thursday, August 5. Hensler’s entered two trees: an 8’ White Pine and a 7’ Fraser Fir. The white Pine received a blue ribbon in the pine category. The Fraser Fir, entered in the fir category, also received a blue ribbon. Further, the White Pine was judged to be Grand Champion and the Fraser Fir was named reserve champion.

Hensler Nursery, Hamlet, IN., operates Christmas Fest, which opens the day after Thanksgiving in Starke County. Nursery Forester, John Scheetz was confident that the trees he brought to Indianapolis would possibly win. According to Scheetz, “I knew the White Pine would place well in competition. The tree was full and being eight feet tall, I knew that it would impress the judge.”

The trees remain on display throughout the fair. Judging occurs in the air-conditioned Ag-Hort building and the trees entered into competition are displayed by the booth area manned by the Indiana Christmas tree growers Association. This is a high traffic area as many people pass by to enter the landscape/architecture exhibit of Ball State University.

2009 Grand Champion White Pine at the Indiana State Fair

Hensler Nursery entered the annual Indiana State Fair this year with two trees, a Fraser Fir and a White Pine. The 8′ White Pine, selected by Hensler’s forester, John Scheetz, was awarded a blue ribbon (1st place) in the pine category and awarded Grand Champion. The Fraser Fir received third place.

We’re so pleased with our victory at the State Fair. We believe this competition gives deserved exposure to the Indiana Christmas Tree growers and real Christmas trees. The photo above shows our White Pine, a real beauty that we chose from our farm in Hamlet, IN.
